Most great accomplishments are preceded by a clear, engaging vision. An individual can have a vision for his or her own life/career, and a work group can have a shared vision that motivates and provides direction. Participants will learn how to develop clear, compelling personal and shared visions that propel achievement.
In addition, participants will learn how to use coaching and mentoring to achieve their visions and to maximize employee performance. Participants will understand the coaching process, their coaching style, how to give developmental feedback, and how to design and monitor an effective coaching plan.

The first part of this course covers basic concepts in molecular biology and genetics, including DNA structure and function, transcription, translation, mutation, and gene therapy. The class will reinforce vocabulary and search terminology (MeSH) and introduce participants to a variety of basic print and electronic resources available in the areas of molecular biology and genetics.
The second half of this hands-on course introduces librarians and other bioinformatics information specialists to resources that can serve as starting points for questions pertaining to molecular biology and genomics databases and software. These resources are “information hubs” that gather data from a large number of sources (centralized data collections), provide springboards to additional information in many other resources, and provide directory information to a wide range of molecular databases and/or software. This second section of the course is Module One of the National Center for Biotechnology Information's (NCBI) 40-hour advanced course for librarians and other bioinformatics information specialists (NCBI Advanced Workshop for Bioinformatics Information Specialists).

This CE course will cover US copyright law and the USA Patriot Act. The US Copyright Law workshop will provide an overview of recent copyright legislation, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), UCITA, and the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. Participants will learn about the competing rights between the public and copyright owners, especially owners of digital information. The workshop will also explore how courts have tried to balance these competing rights and how the law affects information exchange.
The USA Patriot Act workshop will review the recently enacted USA Patriot Act. This new law broadly expands law enforcement's surveillance and investigative powers. In particular, the law raises complicated questions with respect to what constitutes a business record and the law's broad definition of computer trespassers. The law also creates a new relationship between domestic criminal investigations related to foreign intelligence. The workshop will examine the impact of the USA Patriot Act on libraries and library users.

This class covers PubMed, the NLM Gateway, and ClinicalTrials.gov. This class is designed for the NLM searcher who has been searching PubMed but would like a refresher or an update on the newest enhancements, or for the searcher who has been searching MEDLINE from another interface and wants to transitions to PubMed. An overview with demonstrations to learn about the NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov is included. It is expected that students attending this class will be familiar with MEDLINE, MeSH vocabulary and Boolean logic, as these core topics are not covered.

After participating in this grant-writing workshop, it is expected that participants will approach grant-seeking and proposal writing with knowledge and confidence. Each component of the grant-writing process will be addressed and practiced: creating a concept; searching for funders; documenting the need; writing observable and measurable objectives; developing a work plan, an evaluation plan and a dissemination plan; determining resource needs; packaging the proposal. Instruction will be by lecture-demonstration using slides, handouts and directed activities by participants.

This hands-on course trains participants in the basic use of PDAs and explores its health care applications. The goal is to educate the librarians in a train-the-trainer manner to increase the use of Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs) in the medical setting. The participants will explore how PDAs can be used to promote NLM and library services at the local level.

In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to search for and evaluate health and medical information on the Internet for healthcare professionals and consumers. Print and commercially published database ready-reference tools for healthcare research are compared to the core Internet ready-reference tools. In addition, you will learn about, and have available on the Web, a core e-library of 'the best' ready-reference resources for healthcare information on the Internet.
