Contributed Paper Abstract

A Liaison Project to Improve the Information Management and Evidence-Based Searching Skills of First-Year Dental Students

Marilee S. Creelan, Medical College of Georgia Robert B. Greenblatt Library, Augusta, GA.

Purpose: This paper will report on the development of a required four hour course on information management and evidence-based searching for dental students; highlighting the library liaison collaboration between the Librarian and the Associate Dean for Curriculum of the School of Dentistry; and the use of Problem-Based Learning style cases -utilized in previous years by the School - as a method for developing relevant search examples for these students.

Setting/Participants/Resources: The Robert B. Greenblatt, MD Library is an academic medical center library in an urban setting. The education program of the Library has seen a rapid expansion in the past year with the addition of a new education coordinator. Library faculty is always looking for opportunities to utilize liaison relationships to develop meaningful teaching opportunities.

Brief Description: The paper will report on the planning and development of a course taught by a librarian in a series of 2 session/2 hours (each) information management courses to approximately 60 first year dental students. The course objectives will have been developed collaboratively with the appropriate curriculum committee faculty. The course will be hands on and utilize multiple teaching styles.

Results/Outcome: The paper will discuss the design of the course as the product of collaborative faculty planning and teaching activities.

Evaluation Method: The planning for evaluation will be discussed. While the course is required, there will be no formal testing or grade. However, the librarian will develop pre-test and post-test documentation. The results of these tests will be used to measure student use of the information and the practice sessions presented in the course. There will also be questions to measure the perceptions of the students as to what they know at the beginning of the course and what they have learned by the end.
