Serving Medical and Nursing Students and Faculty Information Literacy Needs: Creating a Model for Distance Learners

Purpose: Poster demonstrates the results of a comparison of bibliographic instruction programs at academic institutions and presents a model instruction program.
Brief Description: Poster will describe current medical bibliographic instruction / information literacy programs by gathering and analyzing data from three academic institutions which have medical or nursing departments. The study intends to seek commonalities from among the institutions researched and offer a model to approach and implement information literacy competency standards to students and faculty in a library setting. This inquiry proposes to emphasize academic institutions with distance learning programs, if these can be located. The study will include a review of current literature relevant to the library's instructional outreach objectives.
Results/Outcome: A model bibliographic instruction product includes seven specific areas of bibliographic instruction/information literacy: Mission and Goals; Needs Assessment; Planning Processes; Organizational Structures; Instructional Services; Service Provision; and Marketing.
