Poster Abstract

Show Me the Money: Locating Resources for HIV/AIDS Education Funding

Brenda F. Green, Assistant Professor and Coordinator University of Tennessee Health Science Center Library; Jan T. Orick, Director, Biomedical Library, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.

Purpose: This poster will highlight HIV/AIDS funding sources, resource material, and useful websites. The goal is to connect HIV/AIDS community-based organizations with educational grant funding to help them meet their organizational goals and objectives.

Setting/Participants/Resources: The Health Sciences Library, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, provides services for one of the nation's oldest and largest medical centers. The Biomedical Library serves St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital an internationally respected children’s research center. Librarians from both institutions designed the scope and criteria for sources to be included in this poster.

Brief Description: Authors responded to a call for poster presentations from “Growing Up with HIV/AIDS: Issues in Prevention and Quality of Life” conference. After discussing the topics, both presenters agreed that a poster explaining where and how to locate education grants and funding on the Internet might be beneficial for many of the conference participants. The literature shows that control and prevention of HIV/AIDS lies in education. Healthcare workers and community-based organizations, with proper funding, can provide appropriate resources to families growing up with HIV/AIDS. Librarians can collaborate with local organizations to connect them to resources and help to close the information gap.

Results/Outcome: Information displayed on this poster attracted interest from local and national participants who attended a conference held in Memphis, Tennessee, “Growing Up with HIV/AIDS: Issues in Prevention and Quality of Life.”

Evaluation Method: During the conference several participants expressed how helpful the information resources were. Following the conference, we received several requests for additional information.
