Poster Abstract
Electronic Document Delivery Inroads: The Case of a Rural Teaching Hospital
Thomas W. Hill, Librarian, Self Regional Healthcare, Greenwood, SC.
Brief Description: In the six months from December 2001 through May 2002, various forms of electronic delivery of interlibrary loans (both receiving and sending of items) and documents for local users have jumped dramatically for this rural teaching hospital. This is possible because of four elements:
- the advent of T1 line Internet access;
- purchase of a digital copier/fax/scanner/printer;
- intranet networked access to the digital copier, a color scanner, and graphics handling software;
- library commitment to using electronic document delivery, via TIFF files, for ILL with a convenient email address (library@selfregional.org); and
- internal scanning and document delivery whenever possible for local library patrons.
Results/Conclusion: This poster shows the numbers and percentage changes as electronic document processing takes hold. Our case demonstrates that even smaller hospital libraries can use digital technology to expedite document delivery.
