Poster Abstract

Transitions: Challenged to Change: Librarians on the Move - From Public and Hospital to an Academic Health Sciences Library

Rae Jesano, Instructor University Librarian; Nita Ferree, Instructor University Librarian; Pamela Sherwill-Navarro, College of Nursing Librarian, Reference, Education, and Information Management Dept., Health Science Center Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Purpose: This is a report on the recruitment of three librarians from a public library and two hospital libraries. It includes their subsequent training and adjustment to academic health sciences librarianship.

Setting/Participants/Resources: Located in north central Florida, the University of Florida’s Health Science Center Library is a large academic research library, which serves six colleges and a number of interdisciplinary programs and institutes. The participants are three librarians hired within the last two years, two from hospital libraries and one from a public library.

Brief Description: This poster highlights the similarities and differences between public, hospital and academic librarianship. It documents the training and behavioral changes necessary for the librarians to successfully make the transition to a large academic health sciences library. It will also demonstrate the strengths these backgrounds bring to the Reference Department and to the library.

Results/Outcome: The Reference department is fully staffed with a blend of people with different skills and knowledge bases.

Evaluation Method: Letters continuing the librarians’ contracts and favorable annual evaluations by their supervisor will be one method of evaluation. An informal survey of the librarians will be used to measure job satisfaction.
