Poster Abstract

A Web-based Subject Bibliography Service

Gongchao Yang, Sarah Adcock, Ardis Haaland, Helvi McCall, Walter Morton, Ada Seltzer, Rowland Medical Library, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson MS.

Brief Description: In 1997, the Rowland Medical Library of the University of Mississippi Medical Center initiated a new web-based subject bibliographic service - Topic Tracks. This project was designed to integrate the library collection and other resources in an effort to facilitate easy access and utilization of the library's major collection, and fulfill the University Medical Center's mission in teaching, education and patient care.

Topic Tracks provides selected sources which are organized by types of research publications, listing author, title, call number, and other location designations, such as URLs for electronic materials. The categories include literature guides, handbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, selected textbooks, selected journals, selected indexes and abstracts, selected journal articles, more reference sources, selected electronic materials and specialized sources. To date, over forty Topic Tracks have been established. The subject fields covered include basic sciences, clinical sciences and other current health issues. These Topic Tracks are updated periodically to reflect currency. In the process of creation and revision of Topic Tracks, the library collection is constantly under evaluation in the related subject fields. UMC faculty have been involved in the process of the selection of topics, consultation, and purchase recommendations. All these factors have contributed to improved library collection development and information services.

Results and Outcome: This project efficiently guides users systematically to a variety of sources in the library, saves library users considerable time in accessing related information, and provides a new approach for knowledge management. An analysis of web hits for the past 3 years indicates that use has increased nearly 200 % with an average number of over 1,800 hits per month. The five frequently used Topic Tracks include Transcultural Health Nursing, Nursing Research, Birth Defects, Dental Practice Management, and Childhood Obesity.
