Abdominal Viscera I: Stomach, Spleen, Pancreas, and Duodenum
O B J E C T I V E S
1. Diagram the surface projections of the abdominal viscera on the anterior abdominal wall. |
2. Indicate vertebral levels for landmark structures in the abdominal region and correlate with radiographic studies (X-ray, CT scans, and MRI films). |
3. Identify typical branching patterns of the celiac truck and preview the superior mesenteric truck. Be cognizant of major variations. Be able to grasp the concept of the portal circulation as it relates to the stomach/esophagus and celiac axis. |
4. Identify and discuss the anatomic subdivisions of the stomach, its blood supply, lymphatic pattern of drainage, and autonomic innervation. |
5. Define and dissect the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation to the stomach. |
6. Briefly describe the development of the stomach. |
7. Delineate the surface, borders, relationships, coverings, and blood supply for the spleen. |
8. Delineate the 4 segments of the duodenum and give the special features of each. Be able to describe adjacent relationships, peritoneal coverings and blood supply. |
9. Describe the relationship of the pancreas to the organs surrounding it. Be able to identify on the cadaver and in cross sections, the different parts of the pancreas and the major and minor pancreatic ducts. What sphincter is involved in the closing of these ducts? Discuss the vascular supply to the pancreas. |
