Alice Drew Chenoweth (1903-1998)

Alice Drew Chenoweth was born and raised in Albany, Missouri. In 1924 she graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in chemistry. She stayed at Northwestern to complete a master's degree in history and then taught for several years at a women's college in Montgomery, Alabama. She realized her lifelong dream of attending medical school in 1928, when she entered Vanderbilt University as a first-year medical student. Alice found the new Vanderbilt Medical School to be an exciting place to study and she excelled as a medical student. She was elected to AOA in her junior year. After graduating in 1932, she interned at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY and did additional training at Johns Hopkins. After completing her residencies, she began a private practice of pediatrics in Rosemont, PA.

During World War II Dr. Chenoweth joined the State Department of Health of Kentucky as Director of Maternal and Child Health. Her job in Kentucky brought her national recognition, and she was asked by the Children's Bureau of the Department of Health Education and Welfare to serve as research pediatrician. Dr. Chenoweth spent the remainder of her career in Washington as a public health pediatrician. Among her many accomplishments at Maternal and Child Health Service was to rewrite the government publication "Infant Care," which was a best selling book for years.

Alice Drew Chenoweth received many awards during her career, notably the Elizabeth Blackwell Award in 1973. She also established a scholarship for medical students at her alma mater, Vanderbilt University.
