Following his graduation Reyer was commissioned First Lieutenant, Medical Corps. U.S. Army. He was promoted to Captain in 1919, to major in 1921, to Lt. Colonel in 1939 and Colonel in 1942. He served in the Philippine Islands from 1921 to 1923, Tientsen, China from 1929 to 1932, as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Vanderbilt University from 1937 to 1940. He assumed command of the 300th General Hospital in 1942, a post he held with distinction throughout the war.

He returned to the United States in August 1945. He was awarded the Cross-of the Crown of Italy. He was commanding officer of William Beaumont General Hospital from 1945 until his departure for Japan in 1948, where he served as commander of Tokyo General Hospital for two years before his retirement. Among other awards, he received the Legion of Merit and the Commendation Medal.
