Giles Christopher Savage, MD (1854-1930)

 

Dr. Savage was born in Rienzi, Mississippi and graduated from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1878. He did postgraduate work in London and Vienna for two years, after which he practiced in Jackson, TN. In 1884, he moved to Nashville to accept the Chair of the Ophthalmology Department at Vanderbilt University Medical School. He held this position until 1911, when he retired from teaching and devoted all his time to his practice and writing.

An internationally known authority on eye diseases and the author of a number of surgical textbooks, Dr. Savage was an organizer of the Southern Medical Association. In 1891 he founded the journal Ophthalmic Record. This title eventually became the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Savage maintained a clinic on eight avenue in Nashville for over forty years. This building is now on the National Historic Register and is currently being used as a restaurant. Dr. Savage was very active in church and community affairs and contributed much to the city of Nashville.
