Katherine Anderson Goodpasture (1909 - 1995)

Katherine Anderson was born in Maury County, Tennessee in 1901. After graduating from Central High School in Columbia, she attended Vanderbilt University, where she excelled in mathematics, chemistry, bacteriology, and biology. Katherine was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. She graduated magna cum laude in 1932. After graduation she worked as a laboratory assistant in the Department of Pathology.

In 1936, Katherine entered graduate school at Vanderbilt as a candidate for a Ph.D. in Bacteriology. She completed this degree in four years. Her research interest was viruses, and her dissertation was entitled "Variation in Viruses." After receiving the Ph.D., Katherine was very productive as an investigator, with fifteen major papers in prestigious journals published from 1937 to 1945.

In 1945, Katherine Anderson retired from the world of academic medicine when she married Dr. Ernest Goodpasture. After her marriage, she devoted her considerable talent and energy to environmental causes. She became a master ornithologist and an expert on Tennessee wild flowers and native plants. Her bird research was published nationally, and she served for years as the TN director of the Federal Breeding Bird Surveys. The farm she and Dr. Goodpasture owned, Basin Spring, in Williamson County is a naturalist's paradise. Katherine Anderson Goodpasture ws a distinguished woman scientist and naturalist, who shared her incredible knowledge with all who were interested.
