Louis Rosenfeld (1911-1999)


Louis Rosenfeld was born in Nashville on June 18,1911 and grew up in the Richland West End neighborhood. He graduated from the Peabody Demonstration School and entered Vanderbilt University where he was an outstanding scholar. He was admitted to Vanderbilt Medical School after three years of pre-med. Louis Rosenfeld was elected to AOA in his fourth year of medical school, 1936. He completed his surgical residency at Vanderbilt under Dr. Barney Brooks.

 

In 1942, he was the Chief Surgical Resident, and was called to military service. Dr, Rosenfeld served throughout World War II, as a Major in the U.S. Army. He was chief of the maxillofacial Section of the 300th General and 94th Evacuation Hospitals and received the Bronze Star. After the war he established a private surgical practice in Nashville and taught several generations of Vanderbilt surgical residents.

In his retirement, Dr. Rosenfeld authored three important books on the history of Vanderbilt Medical School:

Memoirs of a Surgical House Staff, 1936-1942--- 1991
The Fighting 300th, A History of the Vanderbilt Unit During World War II------1985
Barney Brooks, M.D.-------1986

Dr. Rosenfeld also co-authored with, H. William Scott, History of Surgery at Vanderbilt University, which was published in 1996.
