Legacies From the Past: A Collection of Medical Student Dissertations, 1851-1859
Eskind Library has 495
dissertations written by University of Nashville medical students. Over 180 dissertations have been digitized, and the remaining collection will also be placed online.
Medical students were required to write a thesis and
deposit it with the Dean by the middle of their one year course. Dissertation topics varied widely, but some popular dissertation
topics included dysentery, typhoid fever, and pneumonia.
The average length of these handwritten papers is 20 pages. They provide a fascinating
glimpse of medical education and practice in the 1850's.
EBL also has the only known copy of the University of Nashville Alumni Directory. It contains three alumni lists: University of Nashville, 1850-1909; University of Nashville-Vanderbilt, 1875-1895; and University of Tennessee, 1876-1909. These schools graduated over 7000 doctors from 1850-1909.
