These five illustrations are from a very special extra-illustrated version of William Wadd’s Comments on Corpulency: or Obesity considered as a Disease, first published in 1816. The four volume extra-illustrated version of this classic work was compiled by Mr. A. M. Broadley of London in 1901. The four large folio volumes contain a wide diversity of pamphlets, news articles, fliers, and other memorabilia concerning a great variety of “treatments”, diets, promotional materials and correspondence, caricatures, engravings, original drawings and other items that provide a remarkable overview of the nature and diversity of the then contemporary remedies advocated for weight loss. This four volume collection provides an interesting and amusing portrayal of the sociology and popular interest in obesity during the 1800’s and early 1900’s. This unique work on obesity was acquired by Dr. William J. Darby from Argosy Books in New York sometime in the 1950’s. He donated this remarkable set of books to the Eskind Library in 1997.
