Database/Software Classes

PubMed Learn to search MEDLINE using NLM's PubMed interface. PubMed is the Medical Center's main access point to the MEDLINE database. Contact Pauline Alexander at 936-1418 for an appointment.
Eskind Digital Library Learn to navigate the Eskind Digital Library portal which offers access to over 2,000 library-sponsored electronic resources and the Medical Center's clinical applications. Gain familiarity with the breadth of descriptiive information and the search mechanisms which can assist you in identifying electronic resources appropriate to your needs during this 30 minute orientation session. Contact Annette Williams at 936-3550 for an appointment.
Training Module Shell EBL's Web-based knowledge management tool, the Training Module Shell, allows for the creation and maintenance of online modules. The user-friendly interface incorporates text and graphics into a learning-oriented format that also utilizes quizzes, questions, and Web links to enhance the learner’s understanding. For more information, please visit the Training Module Shell homepage. Contact John Clark at 322-5089 for an appointment.
Learning Site Using a case-based approach, this learning tool teaches users to analyze the components of a clinical or research question, select and combine relevant search terms, construct effective searches, and recognize the strengths and weaknesses of different resources. The Web-based design provides instruction on demand, 24 hours per day 7 days per week and allows users to work at their own pace. The interactive component of the tutorials allows users to request additional instruction and advice on personal search strategies.

Literature Searching

Acorn Learn to search Acorn, the library catalog. Special Acorn features such as course reserves, non-medical databases, checking library hours, Iris and Athena catalogs and checking your own library record are also discussed. Contact Sandi Martin at 936-1417 for an appointment.
Nursing Tools
CINAHL
Learn to navigate electronic nursing resources, browse within chapters or articles, perform word searches, and view, print, copy, and save results. Also learn to access nursing information by searching CINAHL and PubMed. Contact Pauline Alexander at 936-1418 for an appointment.

Cited Reference Searching

Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)
Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
Learn to search Science Citation Index Expanded through Web of Science for clinical and basic science journal literature and the references cited in articles. Learn to search JCR Web and have access to data that helps evaluate and compare 5,500 scholarly journals from over 3,000 publishers worldwide. Contact Gayle Grantham at 936-1412 for an appointment.

Full-Text Access

MD Consult, ScienceDirect Learn to search Web resources which provide full-text for selected journals, reference books, clinical guidelines or drug information. Contact Pauline Alexander at 936-1418 for an appointment.
UpToDate Learn to access current clinical information on patient care and treatment. Contact Annette Williams at 936-3550 for an appointment.

Evidence Based Medicine

Evidence Based Medicine Databases Learn to search the Cochrane database, ACP Journal Club, and DARE to find synthesized medical literature and commentary on published studies. Contact Pauline Alexander at 936-1418 for an appointment.

Consumer Health

Consumer Health Resources Learn to use a variety of consumer health related information sources such as MedlinePlus and patient handouts from MDConsult & UpToDate. Marcia Epelbaum at 936-1553 for an appointment.

Drug Resources

Micromedex Learn to search DRUGDEX, POISINDEX, IDENTIDEX, DRUG-REAX, Martindale and Pharmaceutical MSDS databases, and the appropriate use of this information. Contact Patricia Lee at 936-1364 for an appointment.

Genetics Databases

Info Hubs A quick introduction to the wide variety of bioinformatics databases and resources with a particular focus on the NCBI's Entrez search interface. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Sequence Similarity Searching Learn how to do nucleotide and protein sequence similarity searching using the NCBI's BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) programs. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Gene-Focused Resources Lean how to use the online version of the Mendelian Interitance in Man database, OMIM. This resource provides expert reviews of human genes and genetic diseases. Also covered is the NCBI's Entrez Gene - a reference database that connects together a variety of information sources on individual genes into one detailed summary. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Clinical Genetics Resources An introduction to genetics and gene-focused resources of use in clinical medicine. These include OMIM, GeneReviews, Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology, and dbGAP. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Human Genome Resources This course will introduce the online resources for accessing, searching, viewing, and manipulating the human genome. Multiple types of genome mapping will be introduced as well as a variety of genome-related tools for exploring sequence annotation (biological feature) data. Focuses on the NCBI's Map Viewer, but also introduces ENSEMBL and the UCSC Genome Browser. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Genetic Variation Resources An introduction to genetic variation resources including the database of single nucleotide polymorphisms, dbSNP, the NCBI's collection of genetic variation information, OMIM, and the HapMap project. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
Structure Viewing Learn how to use the international Protein Data Bank (PDB) and the NCBI's molecular structure database (MMDB) and to display those structures using the viewer program Cn3D. This includes viewing and manipulating individual protein and nucleic acid structures, interposing a sequence alignment onto a known structure, and creating and viewing structural alignments. Contact Jennifer Lyon at 936-1379 for an appointment.
