“Works In Progress Seminars” WIPS is a weekly “core” event of Cell & Developmental Biology. The main goals of WIPS are to provide:
A stimulating, informative, and fun atmosphere where current research is discussed and debated by departmental members at all levels
A formal presentation opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows
Increased community spirit through broad departmental attendance and participation Eligibility for being a WIPS presenter:
CDB graduate students and postdocs are eligible to present at WIPS. The P.I. of the represented lab must be a primary CDB or active secondary CDB faculty member. Nominations for speakers for the following academic year will be requested in early summer. Projects at any stage of development (ranging from early to advanced) are deemed appropriate for WIPS.
Format/suggested guidelines for giving a WIPS presentation: Presentations should be 40-45 minutes in length. While presentation of preliminary data and "work in progress" is very much encouraged, a high standard should nonetheless be set for the tone and quality of the seminar. Presentations should be given in a thoughtful, well-organized manner rather than with a "casual" style. Ideally, the presenter would have received input about the seminar from his/her P.I. prior to WIPS.
Providing feedback to WIPS presenters: A 5-10 minute Q&A session will follow each WIPS presentation. Students in the audience will be given a chance “to get the ball rolling” by asking the first few questions, then the floor will be opened to everyone. In addition, Ethan Lee and Laurie Lee will meet briefly with each WIPS presenter (CDB Gradauate Student) immediately after the seminar to provide feedback on the presentation.
Other responsibilities of WIPS presenters: Each presenter must send his/her seminar title, C.V., and an image for the flyers (optional) to Ethan or Laurie Lee. This information is expected at least one week before the presentation date. "In-seminar" refreshments will be provided by the presenter lab each week except for seminars floowed by a WIPS monthly reception (typically the last WIPS of the month). The lab of the speaker scheduled to give the last WIPS of each month will be responsible for hosting this event.
