Introduction

The Center for Health Services has served disadvantaged communities in the Southeast since 1972.

The Center is a group of community service projects whose goal is to support people working at the grassroots level to take control of their physical, social, political, and environmental health.  The four main projects within the Center today are the Student Community Health Coalition, the Maternal and Infant Health Outreach Worker Program (MIHOW), the South Nashville Family Resource Center, Service Training for Environmental Progress Project (STEP), Community Health Emphasis Program, and Communities And Students Together for Learning-Enhanced Service (CASTLES).

The Center for Health Services is an outgrowth of the Appalachian Student Health Coalition, which formed in 1969 when a group of Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt students organized a community outreach program led by student and community volunteers.

Over the last two decades, Center projects have involved students and volunteers from Vanderbilt, Meharry, and other universities and communities throughout the country.  The projects have included Community Health Effort Support System (CHESS), the West Tennessee Landowners Assistance Program, Black Environmental Advancement Program (BEAP), the Urban Student Health Coalition, the University for Many, the Occupational Health Project, the Tennessee Association of Primary Care Centers, the Agricultural Marketing Project, the Media Project, TenneSenior AmeriCorps, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), and many others.
