Debianne Peterman, Ph.D., MSN, RNC-NIC

Introduction

Dr. Peterman is currently the Director of Nursing Education and Development for Vanderbilt Medical Center. She is responsible for the development and implementation of clinical orientation programs for nursing and care partner staff. She and her team oversee all of the nursing continuing education and development programs for the Medical Center including the Center for Frontline Nursing Leadership, the Nursing Academy, preceptor workshops, high school observation experiences, student nurse summer internship programs, student nurse clinical placement and nurse residency programs for new graduates. Dr. Peterman serves as the liaison between the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and the Medical Center facilitating the tuition agreements for the Lipscomb and Fisk University graduates and was recently awarded the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement. Dr. Peterman’s team is also responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of the Vanderbilt Nursing website (www.vanderbiltnursing.com). Dr. Peterman received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University and her Masters degree in Nursing from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She completed her Ph.D. in nursing at Georgia State University completing her research working with high risk adolescents being raised by their grandmothers who were previously enrolled in a multimodal intervention program. Dr. Peterman has worked in a number of organizations, most recently serving as the vice president for clinical operations and development for Matria Healthcare, Inc. in Atlanta, GA prior to moving to Nashville. She is currently serving as the chair of the Advisory Board for the College of Health and Human Sciences at Georgia State University as well as the president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. She is currently participating in research investigating the impact of simulation learning on the handoffs between anesthesia providers and nurses in the PACU setting. Dr. Peterman will also be serving as the PI on research investigating senior nursing students’ perception of the professional nursing role and development of self-confidence after completing a summer clinical internship program.
