Postdoctoral Training
Postdoctoral and fellowship positions are available for qualified individuals and typically last between 1-3 years. The
goal of these positions is to prepare students for an academic or industrial career in biomedical informatics. They offer
students who already have a substantial background in biomedical informatics a project- and research-oriented opportunity
to increase their knowledge in a particular area and prepare them for a successful career in a leadership position.
The research project will be tailored to the interest of the student and provides an opportunity to complete interdisciplinary
and interdepartmental project. Students will have the opportunity to take didactic classes that are relevant to their area of
interest. In addition, students will be encouraged to present their research at national meetings and publish in peer-reviewed
journals. The department also supports postdoctoral students to apply for research grants and provides ample opportunities for
scientific and scholarly work.
Individuals interested in postdoctoral training are required to have a doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DO, etc.), in biomedical
informatics, a health-related area, or in a quantitative field. In addition, strong quantitative and analytical skills, and
previous programming experience is commonly necessary for these positions.
Applications for admission to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ recently established Post Doctoral Fellowship in Medical Informatics & Quality Improvement, offered in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University, will be accepted for Fall 2008.
