VA Post Doctoral Fellowship in

Medical Informatics & Quality Improvement

A Post Doctoral Fellowship in Medical Informatics & Quality Improvement has recently been established by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Nashville, Tennessee.

The two year Fellowship melds expertise in informatics and quality improvement at the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System and Vanderbilt’s Department of Biomedical Informatics and Center for Health Services Research into a training program designed to develop highly skilled and productive medical informatics professionals with a solid foundation in quality improvement via a rigorous academic program and cross-disciplinary mentoring. Trainees will learn to design, implement, and evaluate real-world clinical informatics applications that integrate principles of quality improvement and patient safety from their inception.

Fellows will work side by side with NLM trainees while earning a tuition-free Masters Degree in Biomedical Informatics from Vanderbilt University. Trainees will propose, implement, and defend a research thesis project under the guidance of their informatics and quality mentors. Trainees will also share education opportunities with physician trainees in VA's National Quality Scholars Fellowship Program. Additional information is available from our detailed program description.

The Fellowship is open to physicians and graduates of doctoral programs in a clinical discipline such as nursing, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy or audiology / speech pathology, a PhD program in computer science or other relevant discipline. Candidates MUST be US citizens. Competitive stipends, healthcare benefits, and $12,000 per year in research and technical support are offered. Details and requirements are available in the VA Program Announcement.
