WizOrder
WizOrder is a computerized clinician order entry system continuously developed by DBMI faculty working with Informatics
Center Staff and trainees at Vanderbilt since 1994. Its major developer, Dr. Antoine Geissbuhler, initially created the
system as an applied postdoctoral fellowship project in 1994-96. WizOrder is used “at the point of care” to support
clinicians as they make important decisions regarding a patient’s clinical course. WizOrder helps to ensure the highest
quality of care for VUMC patients, while reducing medical errors. It incorporates relevant information resources to enhance
and support decision-making. It is now used on virtually all 640 beds at Vanderbilt. Over 10,000 orders are entered into
WizOrder daily, with 70% directly entered by MDs, and the rest by clinical staff. WizOrder alerts are related to the
pharmacy number approximately 400 daily, and provide warnings about patients’ allergies, about drug interactions, and
about potentially inappropriate doses for certain medications [3]. Historically, these alerts have altered behavior
from 10% to 25% of the time. Additional alerts lead to appropriate substitution of one drug for another drug,
as recommended by the institutional Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. WizOrder has provided the foundation
for numerous research projects conducted by faculty throughout the VUMC campus.
