The 11th Annual Program in Developmental Biology Scientific Retreat will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 7-8, 2007 at Paris Landing State Park. Researchers and support personnel from Vanderbilt and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will participate in two days of presentations from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and our invited keynote speaker. This year, we are excited to announce that we will also invite the incoming IGP students to attend the retreat so that they may gain a better understanding of developmental biology, as well as interact with our program members, before thier lab rotations begin next spring. Typically, the retreat runs from Friday mid-morning through lunchtime on Saturday. The schedule includes a Friday and Saturday morning session, a Friday evening keynote address, and perhaps most popular of all, the Friday evening Poster Get-Together. The scenic location, camaraderie among attendees, and good food and drink all combine to form the perfect backdrop for learning about, and discussing, developmental biology. This year, our keynote speaker is Dr. David Kinglsey, Professor of Developmental Biology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Kingsley is interested in the genetic mechanisms that create, pattern, and repair skeletal tissues. His lab uses forward and reverse genetic approaches to study interesting skeletal traits in humans, mice, and stickleback fish.
