The 12th Annual Program in Developmental Biology Scientific Retreat was held on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20, 2008 at Paris Landing State Park. Researchers and support personnel from Vanderbilt and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will participate in two days of presentations from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and our invited keynote speaker. We will also, for the second year, invite incoming IGP students to attend the retreat so that they may gain a better understanding of developmental biology, as well as interact with our program members, before thier lab rotations begin. Our 12th Annual Retreat keynote speaker was Dr. Christopher Wylie, Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of the Division of Developmental Biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Wylie's research studies the early development of vertebrate embryos, using both Xenopus and the mouse as model systems. He gave an engaging talk, followed by a spirited Q&A session, on 'Of form and function: the actin skeleton of the early vertebrate embryo". For more information about his research visit The Wylie-Heasman lab website. In addition to our keynote address, participants heard oral presentations from 11 graduate trainees and 7 postdoctoral fellows from Vanderbilt and St. Jude's. During our poster session (this year featuring Guitar Hero)approximately 50 trainees and fellows presented posters and discussed their research into the early morning hours. The speaker and poster presenters did a wonderful job of discussing their projects and a number of them were awarded 'best of' status for their outstanding efforts at the retreat. 2008 Retreat presentation winners were:
