The VDRTC announced its Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes in May 2006. This award recognizes the work and potential of our most promising trainees. Because the VDRTC helps train graduate students and MD and PhD postdoctoral fellows, we recognized an individual who has conducted important research at Vanderbilt in each of these categories.

Erik Musiek
In the graduate student category, the Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes was Erik Musiek, an outstanding MSTP student
who is just completing his PhD studies with Jason Morrow in Clinical Pharmacology.
The focus of his research has been the role of fish oil in the prevention of cardiovascular disease
in overweight humans and those with the metabolic syndrome.

Anup K. Sabharwal
In the MD post-doctoral fellow category, the Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes was Anup K. Sabharwal, a senior clinical fellow in the Endocrine training program who performed his research with James May in the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology. Anup studied the effect of lipoic acid, an anti-oxidant,
in the laboratory and in a clinical trial.
