Complications of Diabetes

This group of investigators is working in the area of two major complications of diabetes, diabetic nephropathy and vascular complications related to diabetes. The biochemical mechanisms by which hyperglycemia contributes to fibrosis and the development of diabetic nephropathy are being explored. Persistent hyperglycemia is associated increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), formation of advanced glycosylation end-products (AGEs). Other areas of investigation include genetic risk factors of diabetic nephropathy the role of angiogenesis in diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular disease related to diabetes, and diabetic wound healing.
