Collection Development Philosophy

The Eskind Library is strategically focused on developing collections of materials to support VUMC's patient care, research, and education missions. To make information accessible at the point of need, EBL selects current and actively updated electronic materials (typically journals) supplemented with textbooks and critical print materials.

With VUMC leadership's encouragement, the Eskind Library's focus has been to eliminate print resources in favor of providing widely accessible online resources. In keeping with this collection philosophy, EBL's print collection will continue to decrease as access is increasingly provided to materials on the user's desktop.

As a parallel strategy to complement items not available in the EBL collection in print or electronic form, the library employs its Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan Service to provide fast, inexpensive access for the VUMC community.

Selection of books, journals and databases for inclusion in the library is based upon suggestions from VUMC personnel, benchmarking with other institutions, and the EBL collection development team's judgments on the relevance, coverage, and usefulness of specific resources. Suggestions for purchases may be submitted through the online suggestion form, or by calling the library at 936-1410.
