  Evidence-based Medicine Databases

  • Clinical Informatics Consult Service (CICS) Evidence Based Site - The Evidence Based Site is a searchable database of complex questions received by Eskind Biomedical Library (EBL) Clinical Informatics Consult Service librarians rounding with VUMC clinical teams. EBL librarians provide searching and synthesis of the literature in response to complex clinical queries from team members. Areas covered by the CICS Service include the MICU, NICU, PICU, Trauma ICU, Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU, Clinical Research Center, Psychiatry Hospital, Breast Cancer Tumor Board, Pediatric Infectious Diseases & Emergency Medicine.

  • Pathway/Order Set Literature Locator - Within this searchable database EBL librarians provide literature syntheses and expert search statements to evidence-based medicine databases to support the creation and maintenance of VUMC clinical pathways and order sets.

  • Outpatient Clinical Informatics Consult Service (OCICS) - The Outpatient Clinical Informatics Consult Service (OCICS) database contains summaries of evidence from the biomedical literature for patient-specific, complex clinical questions posed by physicians in outpatient clinics at VUMC. Physicians send their questions through the EBM Literature Request message basket in StarPanel, and EBL information specialists review the questions and provide searching and sythesis of the biomedical literature in response to the the clinical queries.

  • Zynx Evidence - Zynx Evidence provides healthcare providers with summarized evidence-based information for high-cost and high-volume clinical conditions and procedures. Module topics are organized by system and include areas such as birth, cardiac, endocrine, gastrointestinal, infectious diseases, oncology, orthopedic, pediatric, pulmonary, renal, surgery, urology, and vascular; along with general and preventive health topics.

  • UpToDate Clinical Reference - UpToDate® is a database of clinical topic reviews that synthesize clinical evidence and practice expertise. The authoring clinicians review the journal literature in their field and related fields to offer current practice recommendations supported by high-quality evidence.

  • EBM Reviews - Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - This database comprises full-text systematic reviews of the medical literature conducted by the international Cochrane Collaboration. Cochrane groups conduct rigorous appraisal and synthesis of the literature to answer focused clinical questions of interest to both clinician and researcher.

  • EBM Reviews - ACP Journal Club - ACP Journal Club contains enhanced abstracts of methodologically sound and clinically relevant research studies published in major clinical journals, along with commentary of the applicability of each study's results in clinical practice.

  • EBM Reviews - Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CCTR) - The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCTR), part of the EBM Reviews collection in Ovid, contains 300,000 bibliographic records for controlled clinical trials in healthcare.

  • EBM Reviews - Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects - DARE is a full-text database that contains brief critical assessments of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in areas such as diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.

  • Clinical Evidence - Updated monthly, Clinical Evidence provides summaries of current knowledge on medical treatment for a range of conditions, developed through literature searching and assessment of systematic reviews.

  • GIDEON - GIDEON is an online diagnosis and reference tool for the tropical and infectious diseases, including epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy information. Comprised of four modules, GIDEON allows users to select among different criteria such as symptoms or agents in order to find information to assist with patient diagnostic and care decisions

  • bmjupdates+ - bmjupdates+, from the BMJ Publishing Group and McMaster University, provides users with access to a searchable database of best evidence from the medical literature and email alerts of selected articles from specified disciplines. After creating a free account, users can access featured articles and headlines. Email alerts can be customized to reflect individual clinical areas of interest, relevance ranking, and frequency preferences.

  • National Guideline Clearinghouse - The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, providing physicians, nurses, and other health care providers with objective and detailed information.

  • Agency for HealthCare Research & Quality - AHRQ, a department of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of health care, reduce its cost, and broaden access to essential services.

  • Health Services/Technology Assessment Text- Developed by the National Library of Medicine, Health Services/Technology Assessment Text (HSTAT) is a searchable collection of large, full-text clinical practice guidelines, technology assessments, quick-reference guides for clinicians, consumer health brochures, evidence reports, and health information.

  • The Evidence Based Knowledge Portal, developed by the EBL with grant funding ( 5R01LM007849 ), includes tutorials addressing facets of statistical analysis and critiquing the medical literature as well as virtual practice cases that allow users to explore principles of EBM (e.g. number needed to treat, selection bias) in the context of a clinical scenario. Cases include pre-and post- tests to allow users to gauge their knowledge and progress.
