CRC Resources - Informatics
Database Services

The Vanderbilt Clinical Research Center Informatics Core has developed a web-based data collection system for use in VUMC clinical research studies. Each project consists of custom study-specific data collection forms with embedded field-based data validity checks, custom select boxes, etc. Data changes are automatically logged creating an audit trail for all project data. Each project supports data file uploads that may be used for limited storage and dissemination of consent forms, zip files, etc. Reporting functions allow export of tables and logs into analysis programs. All projects are structured around a common framework to provide intuitive and consistent graphical user interface control for end users.

Advantages:

  • Form-Based Data Validity Checks (Date, Number, Min/Max, Phone, E-Mail).
  • Data Access Security - Form Level.
  • 24/7 Data Access - Table Dumps (copy/paste to Excel/SPSS).
  • File Management System for storage of files, documents, etc.
  • End Users - Intuitive user interface. Autonomous I/O and administrative functions.
  • Logging - User/Date/Machine/Data Changes.

    Disadvantages:

  • Data entry may be slightly slower than input in a grid spreadsheet.
  • The development process is iterative and requires assistance from the
research team - primarily in defining a data dictionary for the project.
