Welcome to Graduate Medical Education

Residency training began at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1925 when Dr. Alfred Blalock and Dr. Tinsley Harrison were among the first twelve to be trained here. Now 841 residents are being trained in over 70 accredited specialty and subspecialty programs.

Recognizing that "medical education is a continuum marked at various stages by the degree of Doctor of Medicine, completion of an accredited graduate medical education program, and subsequently a continuing life-long interest in professional self-improvement and education," is committed to providing quality residency programs for tomorrow's physicians.
