EVALUATION METHOD

The course has been divided into 2 sections, each of which will be followed by an examination. Because the first 4 weeks of class covers the basic tissue types (epithelium, connective tissue, and muscle) found in all organs, this material will represented on both exams. A practice written exam (8% of the final grade) will be given after the basic tissue types have been covered. It will contain multiple choice and essay questions that are very similar to questions that will appear on the midterm and final exams. This will allow the students and faculty to assess the amount of material the students have mastered at this point in the semester. A second practice written exam (7% of the final grade) will be given later in the course, once again to access the students' progress as the final exam approaches.

The midterm (24%) and final (27%) examinations will each consist of a written exam on the lecture and reading materials, and projection slide ("Kodachrome") exams (each counts 9% of final grade for a total of 18%) covering images that pertain the lecture and laboratory materials. On examination day, the Kodachrome exam will be given in the lecture hall and it will begin at 8:00 am. The written exam will follow at 9:30 am. Students will have until 1:00 pm to complete the written portion of the exam.

Four quizzes on microscope slides will also be given approximately every four weeks throughout the semester. These exams will be given in the 410 Light Hall at the beginning of the laboratory session. Microscope slide quizzes consist of 16 slides, which you will examine for a fixed period of time using your own microscope. The kodachrome and slide quizzes are comprehensive.

A new component to the course will be a subjective class participation grade. You will be evaluated based on attendance and participation in the lecture and laboratory setting, and your cooperation with others (interpersonal skills, helpfulness to your lab partner, etc.) for a total of 12 points. Each pair of students (based on laboratory seats) will also be asked to submit a question for the practice glass slide exams. This question will account for 4 of the 12 points in the subjective evaluation and at least 2 of the 8 questions received for each practice exam will be used on the actual slide quiz.
