Timothy D. Girard, MD, MSCI
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Timothy D. Girard, MD, MSCI is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine and the Center for Health Services Research at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as well as a staff physician and investigator in the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Baylor University and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He then completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine. His recent research efforts include a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effect of a paired sedation and ventilator weaning protocol on short- and long-term outcomes among medical ICU patients as well as a multicenter prospective cohort study of long-term cognitive impairment in survivors of critical illness. His research interests include geriatric critical care, cognitive impairment after critical illness, delirium, and sedation in the ICU. He is currently funded by National Institute on Aging.
