7. PROJECTS
The domain committees and Informatics Center staff developed a set of projects
for evaluation in the planning process. The project list was derived from a list
of over 700 desired capabilities, which had multiple sources:
- In the first year of the planning process, each domain committee developed
a list of expected future characteristics of the domain and wrote scenarios
to bring to life visions of desirable futures. These scenarios provide many
of the desired capabilities.
- To verify and expand on their internal discussions, the domain committees
organized sessions with various faculty and staff groups; after seeing a
video made to illustrate aspects of the visions, participants developed
lists of desired information management capabilities;
- The patient care domain committee discovered additional capabilities
through observation and discussions with staff on information management
rounds in the hospital and clinic; and
- We incorporated suggestions made by participants in the Hospital and
Clinic's Collaborative Organization Design process and the VUMC 21st Century
task forces.
From the capabilities list, two project lists were developed. One for projects
directly supporting education, patient care, and/or research, and a second list
for infrastructure and support projects.
