Model System Genetic Approaches to the Isolation of Transporter Regulators

Many of our studies seeking transporter regulators make use of biochemical and molecular approaches and can be limited by the availability of probes for known genes.

An alternative approach, developed in collaboration with our colleague David Miller at Vanderbilt, targets the C. elegans DAT protein (CeDAT) and takes advantage of the transparency of the nematode for neuronal visualization.

We use powerful techniques available for cell-specific reporter gene expression and well-established genetic strategies to identify in vivo regulators of CeDAT. We are also using this system to test hypotheses regarding DA neuron cell death and the role of candidate transporter regulators.
