SAMPLE ABSTRACT

SAFE PRESCRIBING PRACTICES: KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOR OF PEDIATRIC HOUSESTAFF AND FACULTY

Background:

Errors related to prescribing are a significant problem. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices has recommended that prescriptions include weight, indication and other information for the proper review and dispensing of medications. Compliance with these recommendations has not been studied.

Objectives:

To assess healthcare provider compliance with and attitudes toward recommendations for prescription documentation.

Materials and Methods:

This descriptive study was conducted in a primary care clinic in an academic medical center. After healthcare providers were educated about the importance of including age, weight and indication on prescriptions, 6 months of prescriptions were reviewed for the presence of those information. In addition, an anonymous prescribing knowledge, attitutes and behavior survey was sent to housestaff and faculty. Survey questions used 5−point Likert responses to assess the importance of the above information.

Results:

A total of 7951 prescriptions were written by housestaff, attending physicians and nurse practitioners, with 3096 (39%) missing information. Of those, 23% were missing indications, 10% were missing ages, and 20% were missing weights. Forty−seven out of 74 (64%) surveys were returned by housestaff. Faculty returned 12 out of 20 (60%) surveys. Most respondents agreed it was important to include indication, dosing and weight on prescriptions for children under age 4. Percent agreement decreased with advancing patient age, In children >16, 23% of residents and 17% of faculty agreed that dosing is important. No faculty and only 2% of residents believed that weight should be included.

Conclusions:

Pediatric housestaff and faculty are less likely to include indications, weights and dosing strategies as children advance in age. Research and education about safe prescribing practices should specifically address rationale for documenting these information.
