Dr. Vikrant Sahasrabuddhe, received his medical degree at the University of Pune’s B.J. Medical College in India. He received his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Epidemiology and International Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Sahasrabuddhe is currently a research assistant professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He is also the project director of an NCI-funded study entitled “Cervical Cancer Screening in HIV-Infected Women in India”. This project, a collaboration between Vanderbilt University, UAB, National AIDS Research Institute (NARI), BJ Medical College - Sassoon Hospital, and Johns Hopkins University, seeks to assess the validity of alternative screening tests for cervical cancer among HIV-infected women. The study compares the accuracy and acceptability of cervical cytology ('Pap smears') to direct examination of the cervix with acetic acid (visual inspection with acetic acid or VIA) and testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) among HIV-infected women. Information from this study will guide the development of a larger prevention intervention trial that will aim to develop evidence-based guidelines for cervical cancer prevention in HIV-infected women residing in resource-limited settings.
