Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Support Center

Administered by Vanderbilt University Institute for Global Health (IGH) in partnership with the (AAMC) and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH); Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Fogarty International Center (FIC), the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the NIH National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research, the NIH National Cancer Institute, the NIH National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the NIH National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Office of Aids Research, the National Eye Institute, and the NIH National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute.

The purpose of this five-year program is to foster the next generation of clinical investigators with an eye toward building international health research collaborations in the developing world. The Support Center Currently administers two main programs, Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars (FICRS) and International Clinical Research Fellows (ICRF).

The FICRS program is a one-year, mentored training experience which provides opportunities for U.S. graduate students in the health professions to participate in clinical research and have hands-on experience at top-ranked, NIH-funded research centers in Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. The ICRF program is a one-year, mentored training experience for US medical fellows and individuals engaged in health-related post-doctorate programs. Under the  ICRF program the fellow develops and conducts research that aligns with their professional interests under the mentorship of a foreign collaborator. The FICRS Support Center at IGH oversees overall program management, information dissemination and applicant selection, communications, program coordination and logistics, program monitoring and evaluation, organization of educational programs and conferences, and maintains relationships with program alumni. Dr. Sten Vermund is the principal investigator of the Center.
