About OTLM:
The Office for Teaching and Learning in Medicine was created in 2005 through the vision of Dr. Steven Gabbe, then dean of the School of Medicine, and Dr. Bonnie Miller, then associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, with strong support from many members of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine community. Dr. John Shatzer was the founding director of OTLM and the Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA). In April 2009, after incredible growth of both OTLM and CELA, separate directorships were established. Dr. Emil Petrusa became the director of OTLM and Dr. Shatzer continued as director of CELA. OTLM continues to expand its reach in the School of Medicine through innovative research and education programs as well as institutional service.
Vision:
OTLM will guide and support Vanderbilt University School of Medicine to become an internationally recognized leader in medical education.
Mission:
To achieve this vision, OTLM professionals provide expertise on learning, teaching and assessment of learning outcomes. We offer workshops, educational resources and mentored experiences to faculty members, residents and medical students. We provide test scoring and other curriculum support services to the medical school. We initiate and collaborate on educational research and scholarship with students, residents and faculty members. We collaborate with faculty on internally and externally supported projects that create and build on new innovations in medical education.
