Educator Development Program
EDP Program Overview: Educational initiatives are well underway at many U.S. medical schools. They include curriculum reform, evaluation of curriculum, resident teaching skills and faculty development. Here at Vanderbilt School of Medicine, we are committed to providing educator development initiatives to assist teaching faculty in this endeavor.
The Educator Development Program (EDP) was designed to assist educators in their quest to become outstanding, up-to-date, nationally recognized teachers and leaders in medical education. Participants will also have opportunities to enhance their knowledge of their learning styles while enhancing their teaching skills.
Overall EDP Program Goal: The Educator Development Program (EDP) will focus on enhancing medical education knowledge, attitudes and skills of all Vanderbilt School of Medicine and graduate school faculty members (physicians and scientists), learners (students, residents and fellows) and others who teach in the medical/graduate school environment.
Current and Future Training Options in the EDP: The EDP was designed to provide flexibility and options for learning venues. Over the next several years, we will roll out a variety of educational opportunities. Individuals can develop their knowledge, attitudes and teaching and leadership skills through interactive, hands-on workshops or web-based learning modules. VUMC faculty can select their level of depth for learning experiences ranging from 2-hour introductory workshops to degreed programs. Individuals can also seek one-on-one mentoring through the peer mentoring program. Click on an icon below to find out more about each of the future endeavors for the EDP and the estimated implementation dates.

AVAILABLE STARTING AUGUST 2009: EDP workshops are designed to be interactive learning venues. All EDP facilitators have been trained in workshop design and presentation. In EDP workshops, participants will gain new knowledge, enhance previous knowledge, practice skills and development, create projects, and receive mentoring on individual work activities when appropriate. Most EDP workshops are open to Vanderbilt School of Medicine and Graduate School faculty and learners. A small number of workshops are by invitation only. We will cover topics ranging from educational theory to technology in teaching. See the EDP calendar for a listing of topics being covered and proposed dates. If you would like to be notified via email of upcoming workshops, please contact Mary Ann Nichols. Workshops have limited seating. RSVP required.
Vanderbilt School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Vanderbilt School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
COMING IN THE FALL OF 2009: EDP web-based learning includes flexible self-directed learning options on similar educational topics as the workshops. These learning modules are restricted to Vanderbilt faculty and students with VUNet IDs. Most modules are 20-30 minutes in length with both a pre-test and post-test to assess self-learning knowledge both before and after completing the training module. Participants can log on from home or work and at any time convenient to them to enhance their knowledge of a given educational topic. These modules will be loaded into the online class as they are developed over the next year.
CURRENTLY AVAILABLE: The Residents as Teachers and Leaders (RATL) Program is a combination of self-directed learning and interactive hands-on learning experiences to enhance a resident’s teaching and leadership skills. It is currently available to selected residency programs at Vanderbilt. If you want your residency program to have access to RATL, please contact Charlene Dewey.
AVAILABLE BY REQUEST ONLY: When departments, divisions or sections need educational training for their members as a group, the EDP will schedule sessions on a first-come first- serve basis as time permits. If interested in a specific group training session, please contact Mary Ann Nichols.
COMING IN 2010: For those interested in developing their career as an educator, the EDP can offer a career development program that keeps the participant on track and with a focus on evidence of scholarship. This is a restricted program (by application only) and planned for 2010.
COMING IN 2010: Many educators have never had the opportunity to have an expert teacher observe their teaching and provide them with feedback. When done well, peer mentoring can be a wonderful tool to assist educators in reaching the next level. We hope to bring peer mentoring to Vanderbilt teachers in 2010.
COMING IN 2010-2011: For those educators interested in taking their development to the next level, a certificate of completion program will be offered in the future that allows participants to dive into the educator world without investing in the cost of degreed programs and time commitments outside of their full work day. The certificate program will be by application and will cover all the key topics needed to be an outstanding clinician or scientist educator. Look for this program in 2010-2011.
PLANNING: The serious educator who plans to have a career as an educational leader will be interested in advancing their knowledge and skill through a master’s degree in education or a PhD degree in education.

For additional support, visit the Center for Teaching, which serves teaching and learning in all of Vanderbilt's schools through individual consultations, conferences and workshops, web and print resources, and more.
