Encouraged by many educators throughout her life, Kay has held fast to her eagerness to learn and her pursuit of a childhood desire to “be a teacher.” High school summers were spent as assistant teacher for Head Start in Waterloo, Iowa. Studies in Education at Iowa State University were interrupted briefly, and Kay returned to Waterloo to work as a Skills Improvement Worker in an elementary school. Shortly after studies at the University of Northern Iowa resumed, marriage, a move to South Dakota, and motherhood delayed continuing undergraduate education. Two years later, after the family moved to Nebraska, Kay returned to school and was awarded her B.S. in Elementary Education (K-12) from Hastings College. Owning and growing a business to include four locations within the state was an opportunity too good to pass up, and classroom teaching was again postponed. Afforded the flexibility of becoming a “professional volunteer” in the community and state during those years, Kay was presented with numerous educational opportunities in many different arenas: Girl Scout leader, trainer, and program coordinator; church school teacher, trainer of teachers, writer of curriculum; presenter at community education workshops sponsored by the University of Nebraska. In 1982, Kay joined Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska as Director of Volunteer Services and enrolled in the MBA program at Kearney State College. A resident of Nashville since 1985, Kay has worked in home health care administration and retail management prior to coming to Vanderbilt in 2001. Having worked in the Office for Medical Student Affairs and the Office of Graduate Medical Education, Kay joined OTLM in July 2005.
