Programs & Initiatives

Office for Teaching and Learning in Medicine (OTLM) - provides educational support for the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine including sponsoring Medical Education Grand Rounds, Medical Education Journal Club, a yearly "Great Ideas in Vanderbilt Medical Education" GIVME Grant, faculty and resident development workshops, MedEd Matters monthly eBulletin, educational technology assistance, test scanning and item analysis, curriculum and course evaluation support, and consulting on emergent educational issues in medical education. Additionally, OTLM is the umbrella office for two research and education centers (CELA and CORE).
Center for Experiential Learning & Assessment (CELA) - is a research and education center that focuses on providing high quality simulations for training medical students and other health care professionals. CELA has two programs: The Program in Human Simulation (CELA-PHS) provides a safe, non-threatening environment to teach, enhance and assess the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of health care providers using (primarily) standardized patients and The Simulation Technologies Program (CELA-STP) works to improve healthcare quality through enhanced training of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals through the use of simulated patient interaction and treatment.
Center for Outcomes Research in Education (CORE) - is a research and education center that focuses on development of high quality measures of learning achievement. CORE collaborates with Vanderbilt faculty and administrators to create systems for and evidence of successful learning at all three levels of formal medical education (UME-GME-CME). CORE also works to build collaborative relationships around medical education scholarship and to that end, hosts monthly CORE Conversations to discuss medical education research as well as seminars and workshops.
