Requirements for the MSCI Degree

Didactic Work: Candidates must complete 31 hrs of didactic courses (20 hr core + electives) covering the essentials of study design, biostatistics, ethics, drug development, and data analysis.

Mentored Research Apprenticeship: The core of the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation is the completion of a mentored research projects. The research must be patient oriented and involve direct measurements on patient-derived samples or the use of investigational therapeutic of diagnostic techniques.

Career Path Development: A monthly seminar series will permit candidate to meet successful patient-oriented researchers. Topics of discussion will include academic "rules of the road," time management, promotion/tenure issues, grants management, and overall program evaluation. Candidates will hone their scientific communication skills through an annual presentation at this forum.

Master's Thesis: Candidates will complete a Master's thesis based on their research project. This thesis will be due in the Spring of the Yr 02. A completed grant federal or major foundation grant may serve in lieu of a thesis.

Required Application Materials:
1. Letter from mentor documenting commitment to candidate’s career development.
2. Three letters of recommendation (may include mentor).
3. Letter from Division Director or Department Chair assuring 80% protected time for research.
4. Research Plan: Three to five pages (should describe Specific Aims, Background and Significance, Experimental Methods and 5. Procedures, Long-Term Objectives). Plans exceeding the five-page limit will be returned.
5. Proposed mentor’s curriculum vitae, including Other Support and two-page Biosketch
6. Curriculum Vitae of applicant.
7. Statement of how this proposed research plan fits into your career objectives.
8. Letter stating confirmation of tuition payment from responsible person or department.
