Vanderbilt may nominate five candidates for the 2012 Career Awards for Medical Scientists, which supports physician-scientists bridging advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service.

Grants are $700,000 for a five-year period.

Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Burroughs Wellcome Fund encourages nominations from candidates who work in reproductive science. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.

Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., or equivalent clinical degree, be a clinical fellow, resident, or a postdoctoral researcher and have at least two years of postdoctoral research experience, but not more than 10 years since their most recent doctorate at the time of application.

Candidates who hold a junior faculty appointment (Lecturer, Instructor, Assistant Professor-non tenure track, etc.) may be eligible if they have been in a faculty position no earlier than July 1, 2009.

Anyone interested in being considered as one of Vanderbilt’s five nominees must submit the following (in PDF format) to John BuAbbud (john.buabbud@vanderbilt.edu) in Foundation Relations by Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.

1. A letter of nomination from the department chair highlighting the nominee's achievements, and the basis for selection (limited to three pages);

2. Brief three- to six-page research plan;

3. A brief CV or NIH biosketch; and

4. A budget (less than one page) describing how award funds will be used.

Once received, all proposals will be forwarded to an internal review committee that will choose the final nominees. The chosen nominees will submit full proposals to the foundation by the Oct. 3 deadline.
