Ronald Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., to Deliver John E. Fryer Memorial Lecture, Noon, Monday, Sept. 26.
The John E. Fryer Memorial Lecture will be presented at noon Monday, Sept. 26, in 208 Light Hall. The speaker will be Ronald Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Psychiatry and Radiology, who will speak on "John E. Fryer: Contributions and Consequences."
Fryer was a Vanderbilt medical school graduate who gave a speech at the 1972 annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in favor of removing homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The speech, which Fryer, who was gay, delivered anonymously is widely credited with moving the APA to no longer consider homosexuality a mental disorder.
To have lunch at the lecture, please RSVP by 5 p.m. Friday to https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/calendar/event/john-e-fryer-memorial-lecture-series.
The lecture is sponsored by Vanderbilt LGBT, M.D., a student organization.
