University-wide Limited Submission Opportunity Grant Program: Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation

Vanderbilt University may nominate two candidates for the Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation Grant Program for 2012. These awards provide approximately $50,000-$70,000 per year for one to three years for research that advances knowledge in the various fields of medical and health research. The foundation is most interested in basic research with upstream potential for impacting disease.

Ideal projects will come from (1) established investigators in need of initial start-up funding to move a project forward to the point of obtaining other independent funding or (2) to support highly promising young investigators with tenure-track appointments at the time when start-up funds are limited and initial progress is dependent on additional funding. It is not the intent to support projects that are already under way and are already receiving significant grant support.

In order to be considered as a nominee for Vanderbilt University, please send the following as a preliminary proposal, in PDF format, to John BuAbbud, (, by Wednesday, Dec. 7, at noon:

• A letter of nomination from the candidate’s department chair or center director

• A description of the proposed research (not to exceed five double-spaced pages)- include title, specific aims, research methods and research significance (references may exceed page limit)

• The candidate’s CV or NIH biosketch

• A list of all past, current and pending support

Each applicant submitting a proposal by the deadline of Wednesday, Dec. 7, at noon will receive a confirmation e-mail that the application has been received. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

All proposals will be forwarded to an internal review committee that will choose the final nominees by late December. Once the decision has been made, applicants will be notified by e-mail of the status of their proposals, and the chosen nominees will submit their proposals to the foundation by Feb. 1, 2012.

If you have any questions, please contact Ashley Brady, Ph.D., (, associate director of Foundation Relations.
