VUMC responds to today's winter weather

Heavy snow began falling early Thursday morning, with several inches accumulating on the Vanderbilt campus.

As of  Thursday afternoon, Medical Center Orange Alert for Inclement Weather remains activated. Staff and faculty may refer to the Quick Reference Guide for instructions. The VUMC Emergency Operations Plan has been activated and the North EOC is open.

Staff members are required to remain on duty until released by their supervisor or the Incident Commander. Please call the North EOC at 615-322-4362 if you need assistance. In addition, the Staff Accommodations Sub Plan has been activated. Please call 615-936-4444 to make a room reservation.

With the activation of the Orange Alert and Inclement Weather Plan, VUMC puts into place a comprehensive system that includes an incident command structure to manage through a crisis such as an ice storm, and an emergency staffing plan that shelters faculty and staff in place so they can continue to provide patient care, including onsite, around-the-clock facilities that feature temporary sleeping quarters and showers.

The hospitals and clinics have separate attendance policies during inclement weather to ensure that services are available to VUMC patients. For staff in the hospitals and clinics, please refer to departmental policies and your area manager for guidance on attendance during inclement weather.

With more than 1,000 patients occupying its hospitals daily, and with these facilities even busier during winter months due to seasonal influenza and respiratory illnesses, VUMC maintains an around-the-clock capability 365 days a year to provide its patients the safest and highest quality health care services.

Updated information on clinic closings can be seen here. If a patient can't make an appointment due to the weather, please ask him or her to call tomorrow to reschedule.

Vanderbilt’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) advises the following:

• Primary and secondary roads are snow covered — driving conditions are quite treacherous.
• MTA bus service is operational on snow routes only.
• Plant Operations is working to plow and sweep primary sidewalk routes.
• Use extreme caution while walking on sidewalks and parking lots.

As always, employees are expected to use their best judgment about commuting during times of inclement weather.
