Message from the Vice Chancellor: New Department of Microbiology and Immunology Chair Committee Search

Colleagues,

I am pleased to report a committee has been named to conduct the search for a new chair for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

It was announced in January that after two decades of stewardship, Jacek Hawiger, M.D., Ph.D., decided to transition from the role of chair, a position he has held since 1990, to a new role that will enable him to devote more time to his flourishing research program.

Under Dr. Hawiger’s tenure the department underwent significant growth in faculty recruitment, graduate student enrollment, grant funding and is known for an unfettered commitment to teaching and training. Dr. Hawiger will continue as chair until his successor is identified.

The search committee will be chaired by Samuel Santoro, M.D., chairman of the Department of Pathology. Other committee members are: Nancy Brown, M.D., Alfred George, M.D., James Goldenring, M.D., Heidi Hamm, Ph.D., Lawrence Marnett, Ph.D., Harold L. Moses, M.D., Louis Muglia, M.D., Ph.D., and David Piston, Ph.D.

Furthering the foundation of outstanding progress and collegiality established during the last 20 years under Dr. Hawiger’s leadership, the next chair will play an important role, not only for the department, but as a partner throughout our campus, working within our research community and with our leadership as we work to realize our common goals.

We have great confidence in the guidance of our distinguished faculty chosen to conduct this search.

Sincerely,

Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs
Dean, School of Medicine
