Viggiano is a practicing gastroenterologist and specializes in therapeutic endoscopy. He has taught physiology and clinical medicine for more than 25 years and has received numerous teacher-of-the-year awards. At Mayo, he has served as the medical school’s curriculum committee chair and dean of Student Affairs and assistant program director in the Internal Medicine Residency.

Viggiano holds a Master’s degree in adult education and has built an infrastructure for education research at Mayo. He designed, implemented and chairs Mayo’s Education Innovation Award and has served on Mayo’s Academic Promotions’ Committee and Leadership Development Council.

In his role as dean for Faculty Affairs, Viggiano coordinates academic career development of faculty. He has served on the executive committee for the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Research in Medical Education Section and Central Group on Educational Affairs, and he chaired the AAMC group on faculty on affairs. He has also been appointed an examiner for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, served on the board of directors of the International Association of Medical Science Educators and on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Health Professions Education Collaborative. He has published and delivered invited presentations on professionalism and leadership in medicine.
