Updates Made to the Hours of Work Policy

There has been an update to the Human Resources Hours of Work Policy (#HR-030) that provides guidelines for staff work hours.

New language in the policy includes the following:

Breaks for Nursing Mothers – The Fair Labor Standards Act has been amended to require employers to provide nursing mothers reasonable breaks to express breast milk for her nursing child. In addition, a location that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public must be provided. A restroom is not an acceptable place. The policy has been revised for compliance with the changes to the law.

Uninterrupted Meal Breaks – Non exempt staff members who work six (6) or more consecutive hours are required to take a meal break of at least 30 minutes without interruption.

Compensatory Time – Vanderbilt, as a private institution, cannot allow staff members to “bank” time to take off at a later date as many public institutions are allowed to do. Therefore, time off granted as compensatory must be approved and administered within the same pay period it is worked. Due to the complexity of administration of compensatory time off, it is not recommended for use on a regular basis.

The revised Hours of Work Policy has been posted with an effective date of Oct. 1.
