RESEARCH SUMMARY

Dr. Edgeworth’s research focuses on the proteomic analysis of primary neoplasms involving the central nervous system. Proteomics is the study of the proteome, the protein compliment of genes expressed by tumor cells. By understanding which proteins are present in brain tumors, he hopes to gain insight to the underlying mechanisms of tumor formation, proliferation and migration. In addition, proteomics will allow discovery of tumor biomarkers. These biomarkers have the potential of greatly enhancing our current tools for providing a diagnosis and predicting the prognosis of individual patients. More importantly, proteomic biomarkers may assist us in selecting the right treatment (i.e. chemotherapy) based on each individual patient’s tumor characteristics.

Dr. Edgeworth is also involved in the development of clinical trials of chemotherapy and symptomatic treatments for patients with primary central nervous system neoplasms. This includes clinical trials developed at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, as well as trials sponsored by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, national organizations for cancer trials. He is also involved in the treatment and symptomatic management of patients with neurological complications of cancer from other sites.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr. Edgeworth earned a B.S. degree is Chemistry at Mississippi State University in 1995 and his M.D. degree at the University of Mississippi in 2000. The next year he completed an Internal Medicine Internship at Vanderbilt University followed by Neurology Residency from 2001 to 2004. He served as Chief Resident of Neurology in 2003-2004. Following completion of his residency, he became the first Clinical Fellow (2004-2005) in Neuro-Oncology at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Edgeworth was named Assistant Professor of Neurology at Vanderbilt University in 2005. At that time, he was also accepted to Vanderbilt University’s Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program, which he completed in 2007. Through his research endeavors and the MSCI program, he was honored to be selected and supported by the Vanderbilt Clinical Research Scholar (VCRS) program from 2005-2008. He also serves on the Scientific Review Committee for the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. In addition to his ongoing training, clinical and research activities, Dr. Edgeworth is involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, graduate students, interns and residents.

Dr. Edgeworth is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Tennessee and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
